Memphis-based A2H, a collaborative planning and design firm with offices across Tennessee and North Mississippi, has acquired Knoxville-based architecture and planning firm Red Chair Architects. Red Chair founder David Cockrill AIA, a native Memphian, brings decades of planning and design experience to the A2H team and will manage the firm’s Knoxville office.

A2H completed the acquisition of Red Chair Architects in July, and the combined practice now operates as a single entity — with five offices across all three of Tennessee’s grand divisions.

“A key part of the A2H’s strategy has been to expand our presence into Middle and East Tennessee. We have admired David and his firm’s work for several years, so when A2H approached Red Chair about transitioning the firm from his ownership, we knew it would be a natural fit,” says A2H President Logan Meeks of the acquisition. “Both A2H and Red Chair place great value in understanding the importance of how the built environment is planned, designed, constructed, and utilized,” Meeks went on to say. “This unique opportunity to expand into East Tennessee through an established, known entity allows us to quickly execute our strategy.”

Red Chair Architects has been a notable presence in the Tennessee architectural community for years. The firm has regularly been recognized at both state and national levels for its high-quality design work, specifically in the educational, healthcare, and adaptive reuse markets. “The joining of our firms is a great opportunity to leverage our combined body of work in a greater way,” said Cockrill. “Red Chair has always been a client-focused practice, and now we can offer our combined clients a greater depth of resources and the comprehensive benefits of an integrated design team of architects, interior designers, engineers, landscape architects, and planners.”

With the acquisition and the recent opening of a Nashville office, A2H now has a network of offices across the state, linking more than 100 talented professionals through state-of-the-art technology and a collaborative approach to design excellence. “With the advancement of technology in the Architecture / Engineering / Construction industry, now more than ever we see the importance of building a team of talented design professionals to foster creativity on our projects,” said A2H Design Principal Stewart Smith. “David and his experience will further enhance A2H’s ability to live up to our mission statement, Creating an Enhanced Quality of Life for our Clients and Community, and we’re thrilled to have him joining the team.”
