For the past twenty years, Riverdale K–8 School had supplemented its student growth with 23 portable classrooms for instructional use. Almost immediately after acquiring Riverdale School, the newly formed Germantown Municipal School District decided not only to replace the portables with a permanent facility for grades 6–8, but also to use GMSD’s first major capital project as a catalyst for instructional shifts across the entire school district.

A2H designed a ground-up 60,000 SF middle school on the existing Riverdale School site. The new facility establishes a brand for the aesthetic of Germantown Municipal Schools moving forward — including pops of vibrant color as a wayfinding element, cost-effective metal panels, alternating shades of brick, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Adjustable and daylight harvesting LED light fixtures, coupled with oversized windows, create an inspiring atmosphere unique to any school in Shelby County and add to the educational experience in both quality and sustainability.

A2H  joined forces with the District in the very beginning phases of the project and participated in the design as a full-service team — from conceptualization to construction management.

Riverdale School was recognized by the Memphis Business Journal as the Best New Construction of 2018 — Medium ($10-20 Million) Award Winner.
